Pouring concrete in winter: 7 critical rules
When the temperature drops below 5 °C, concrete sets more slowly and the risk of freezing rises. Here is what to watch for in winter pours.
If concrete freezes before reaching adequate strength, its internal structure can be permanently damaged. Keep these rules in mind when planning winter pours:
- Watch the forecast: check at least 48 hours ahead of the pour.
- Order cold-weather concrete: specify anti-freeze admixture and heated water when ordering.
- Clean forms and rebar: leave no ice or snow behind.
- Never add water on site: it lowers strength and raises the risk of freezing.
- Place quickly: keep mixer waiting time to a minimum.
- Cover the surface: use insulated covers or tarpaulins to retain heat.
- Extend stripping times: do not load the concrete before sample results are in.
